Scenario: Ghani - Arm - Birth Defect

Post by kaurmandy » Wed Jul 13, 2016 11:51 pm

A 3 ½ year old boy, Ghani, who attends the service has an arm with a birth defect. His mother has asked that he doesn’t join in any games where catching is involved, as she doesn’t want him to fail and feel hurt or discouraged.
You will need to discuss the dignity of risk with the mother. Describe what you would say to assist Ghani’s mother to understand the service’s practice here.
In your response, ensure you explain why Dignity of Risk is the educational practice we follow and how this will benefit her son.
Answer:
• Staff to acknowledge the mother’s opinions and feelings for her son as every parent may feel over-protective in such situation.
• Ensure to discuss for mother’s concern privately and in a respectful manner. Briefly talk about how stopping children from taking risks into their daily routine or over- protectiveness, taking away their choices, and crushed their hopes.
• Share relevant documents to support your discussion for ‘duty of care’ and ‘diversity of risk’ for example,
- Service ‘inclusion policy and procedures’
- Service ‘Dignity of Risk policy and procedures’
- ‘inclusion intervention program for young children in early childhood’
- ‘Guide to the Education Care Services National Law and the Educations Care Services National Regulations 2011’
- ‘EYLF - Quality area1’ to support understanding of Education program and practice in childcare.
- Share guide to National Standards for disability services
• Share information about children’s right to inclusivity (under United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) and their long term benefits if they take calculated risks such as :
- their right to make an informed choice
- to experience life and taking advantage of opportunities for learning
- developing competencies and independences
• You can talk about curriculum decision-making for all children (with or without disability) which are based on each child’s strength, interest, needs, and ability, and designed with the aim of inclusion and to ensure each child have equal opportunities to participate and learn.
• Discus about physical environment which is provided free from hazards/ or risks and adequate supervision is provided for all children’s safety.

need to know if im on the right track
please need help to complete this case study
thanks

Yes, the points you have made are on the right track! You will need to extend on the points you had made as if you were explaining it to Ghani's mother. Remember to keep it simple and informative...

"Dignity of risk” means respecting each individual’s autonomy and self-determination (or “dignity”) to make choices for himself or herself.
