Below I'm adding a copy of a policy/procedure for an emergency evacuation. This should help with you a a few of the questions for your assignment. with the remaining questions such as where are fire points located, where are assembly points etc, you will need a copy of a centre's evacuation layout. Unfortunately I don't have one to give you, however when you go on your work placement you should be able to get a copy from there.
Evacuation procedures

The service will ensure that there is an evacuation procedure to be followed in the event of a fire or other emergency at the centre, and that the evacuation procedure is clearly and prominently displayed at the centre’s exit points.

A diagram showing the locations of exits and the position of the diagram in relation to the exits will be clearly and prominently displayed at the service.

The evacuation procedure will be practiced at the workplace at reasonable intervals. Members of staff who would be required to help control or extinguish a fire at the centre shall be appropriately trained and provided with appropriate protective clothing and
equipment as necessary.

R.A.C.E. (Actions to be taken in the event of a fire)

Remove
• Remove children from immediate danger. Check to make sure no child has been overlooked

Alarm
• Raise the alarm
• Alert rest of staff (blow whistle)
• Ring Fire Brigade on 000 from safe area

Contain
• Contain fire by closing door (s)

Evacuate
• Evacuate to assembly area (s) and ensure all children are accounted for

Other Staff Responsibilities

Other staff (preferably the team leader in each room) will organize a quick and orderly evacuation of all children. Children 0-18mths maybe evacuated by placing them in a fire cot (small enough to fit through all doors and corridors and with wheels large enough to prevent jamming) and wheeling them to safety.

The authorized supervisor and staff will check off the names of evacuated children against the attendance roll and ensure all staff are present a record will be kept of all evacuation drills and recommendations for improving centre responses to an emergency arising from each drill will be referred to the Manager of Children’s Services. No one will re-enter the building until advised by the Fire Brigade Captain.

Should exits be blocked by fire, a window is smashed from the inside and the children passed outside. Children are wrapped in blankets before being passed through the flames. If it is only a small fire, with no danger to operator, the nearest person will use the fire extinguisher to put out the fire AFTER ALERTING OTHER STAFF.

Hope this helps,

In a children’s service of your choice, find out the following procedures for dealing with an emergency evacuation.
(Please attach a copy of the service’s policies and procedures for dealing with emergency evacuation procedures to your assessment.)
1. What alarm system is there for an emergency and what does it sound like?
The type of alarm system used in this workplace is an air horn and/or whistle continuously.

2. What immediate response is required from workers?
Evacuate all children and staff from building to an outside area/assembly point collecting any emergency medication needed (refer to evacuation map for assembly point).

3. What would your responsibility in the event of an evacuation?

4. Where are the exit points located?
The exit points are located and the front and the back of the building. (refer to evacuation map).

5. Where are the assembly points if there is an emergency evacuation?
The assembly point will be located outside the building (externally) in a safe area, which can also be located on the evacuation map.

6. What are the various roles and responsibilities for the qualified and unqualified workers during an evacuation?
• Calling 000
• Collect evacuation bag(will have its own home)
• Check all areas to make sure ALL rooms are empty, as well closing all windows and doors before leaving.
• Ensuring all family members and visitors follow directions to evacuate the building
• Taking the red attendance sheet (folder)
• Marking off each child in your care once they are accounted for
• Report this number to the centre Director

7. How often is the evacuation procedure practised at the service and how does this compare with the requirement within your state and territory childcare regulations? (Please quote the relevant section.)
The fire evacuation procedure is practiced regularly throughout the year, in accordance with requirements specified in ACT Childcare Services Standards 2009 and the Victorian Children’s Services Regulations 2009.
8. Is the evacuation procedure practised at different times of the day? If so, why is it practised at different times?

9. How will everyone know when it is safe to go back into the building?

10. What changes could be made to the emergency evacuation procedures you have described?

Yes, your responses are fine! Awesome Job
3. What would your responsibility in the event of an evacuation

You would probably assist the room leader by gathering children to take them to the evacuation point, making sure that no children are left behind in the room by checking the room.

8. Is the evacuation procedure practised at different times of the day? If so, why is it practised at different times?

Typicaaly, it is practiced at different times throughout the day. We don't know when a real fire will take place so we need to be prepared.

9. How will everyone know when it is safe to go back into the building?

Director will do a roll call making sure all children/staff are accounted for and then will determine when it is safe to go back inside after confirming with fire fighters etc.

10. What changes could be made to the emergency evacuation procedures you have described?

You will have to come up with some points for this. Maybe something like practice on different days at different times. Add an evacuation backpack in each room etc.

Hope this helps,

How does your workplace ensure that all staff are aware of what to do in case of emergency.
