Case study
Joanna has decided to create an experience for children in her care.
A humpback whale has been sighted near the coastline, so Joanna decides to centre an experience on that event. She plans her experience so that she can introduce new information about whales and the ocean.
One of the aims of the experience is to encourage the children to think about the ocean environment and ask questions. Joanna has located posters and reads them a book about whales.
Some of the children are interested, but she has difficulty keeping their interest.

1. Provide a summary of how this experience could be used to initiate and extend the children’s inquiry process. Discuss what resources and materials could be used to support the experience and how the children could be intrigued or surprised. Discuss what age group this experience suits and what topics of conversation may stimulate their thinking and interest.

Im thinking for the answer maybe making a under the sea wall theme with a blue sheet for the back drop and getting the children to colour whale cut outs and they could attach them to the sheet? While coloring the whale cut outs they could name different parts of the whales. They could also find out what the whales eat and draw some of their food to attach to the sheet aswell.
Also maybe an excursion to the aquarium to see some whales?

Yes, you're on the right track! Instead of giving them whale cutouts for them to colour. Maybe you could print out the photo of a humpback whale and add it to the drawing table and get the children to draw, paint their own humpback whales... If you want to use stencils the children could cut them out themselves before painting, colouring it in...
