17. Symbolic relationships include an understanding of symbols used in everyday life to convey meaning. These symbols include concrete objects, physical actions, and spoken and written symbols. Read each scenario and suggest an educator response that could support or reinforce the understanding and use of symbols.
Complete the following table - (scenario ‘a’ is provided as an example)
Scenario Symbol Type Educator response

a. When the highchairs are set up 15month old Deka squeals with delight, he knows it’s time for morning tea. Action symbols: recognition that something is going to happen. Answer: “You know it’s nearly time for morning tea, don’t you Deka. Are you a hungry boy?”

b. The educator and two toddlers are packing away. A third toddler, Jay, brings over a teddy. The teddies have already been put in the cupboard. Object symbols: provide opportunities for children to explore and discover the properties of objects, which helps the child to form a mental image of the object when it is out of sight.

:
c. The educator carries a box into the room for the children to unpack. There are several new toys inside which have been ordered from the catalogue which the children like to look at through the day. Picture symbols: use pictures of familiar objects to assist in understanding that a two dimensional picture represents a real three dimensional object.

d. The educator in the 3 year olds’ room has put a display of pictures on the wall that shows close-up images of a variety of shoes. Language symbols: talking, pointing and labelling assists the child to understand that words are symbols for objects, actions, feelings, ideas, concepts and beliefs.

e. The educator has a series of pictures that show the various routines that occur throughout the day eg arrival, play, outdoors, morning tea etc. Number symbols: counting and the use of numerals assist the child to develop a concept of quantity and time.

So, you need to add the educator responses for each of the scenario...

b - "Thanks Jay for helping, you know exactly where the teddy belongs don't you".

c - "Hey everyone, these are the toys that we ordered from the magazine, they finally arrived"

Hope this helps,
